Police officer pulls man off railway tracks ahead of oncoming train

A Transit police officer who pulled a man from railway tracks ahead of an oncoming train in New Jersey is being hailed as a hero.

The officer, Victor Ortiz, followed the man who he saw getting off a train at Secaucus Junction as the man jumped on to the tracks.

Mr Ortiz said the man knelt down on to the tracks as a train was about half a mile away and kept saying "I just want to die".

He grabbed the man and was eventually able to pull him off the tracks just as the train was coming into the station.

NJ Transit officials say they could not be more proud of Mr Ortiz and hoped the incident reminds people what police officers do every day.
