Poland border watchtowers 'planned'

Poland plans to build six watchtowers along its border with Russian exclave Kaliningrad, according to reports.

The move comes after Moscow said it will place state-of-the-art Iskander missiles in the territory.

A Polish border guards spokeswoman was cited as saying that six such towers would be built along the 125 mile (200km) border between Poland and Kaliningrad.

The move comes amid heightened tensions between Russia and the West over the Ukraine conflict.

The spokeswoman said that the cost of constructing the towers in Poland, which is on the European Union’s eastern flank, would be at least 14 million zlotys (approximately €3.4 million).

Most of that is to come from EU funds.
