PICS: New images reveal Paris apartment siege destruction

New images from the aftermath of the police raid in Saint-Denis reveal the extent of the damage caused by the dramatic showdown between the holed-up terrorists and the French security forces.

Pictures obtained by ITN show how holes were smashed in walls and entire floors gave in as the terrorists remained camped out in the apartment block.

One image shows how a whole ceiling was blown off an apartment, with iron bars and wires left hanging over the floor below.

Another shows a series of eight or nine-inch bullet holes slashing through an apartment ceiling, while a nearby window is completely blown out.

A tiled wall riddled with bullet holes shows the effects of more gunfire from the stand-off in the Paris suburb, in which three people were killed, including Abdelhamid Abaaoud, the man believed to be behind the attacks in the French capital.

Another of the pictures shows what appears to be a mains power unit hanging off a completely shattered wall with all its wires hanging limp. The remainder of the wall is charred, grey and covered in dust.

A photograph taken from lower down in the building shows how the entire window on the apartment was blown apart, leaving a gaping hole in the building and an easy view into the room from far below.

The damage was not contained to that room, though, and people living in the building described how they were told by police to get out because the entire place was going to blow up.

That was not the case in the end, but another image shows how a communal staircase was covered in debris when the wall was blown through and peppered with bullets.
