Pentagon security to be improved
It has been reported that the plane which crashed into the Pentagon was a jumbo jet.
The plane crashed into the west side of the Pentagon, which is thought to house army officials, working in planning and logistics.
Last year, the Pentagon was penetrated as far as the Defence Secretary’s office by undercover investigators who were posing as law enforcement officers.
Pentagon officials pledged to improve security at the complex after the breach by agents working for the investigative arm of Congress.
The Pentagon is the world’s largest low-rise office building and was designated a national historic landmark in 1992.
It has many of its own facilities for the use of staff - including a designated police force and a child-care centre.
A multi-billion dollar renovation project was under way to update and improve conditions in the building - which had not been substantially renovated since it was constructed during the Second World War.
