An intruder mauled to death by two pit bull terriers in South Africa was found only when the dogs' owners saw they were covered in blood.

The dogs attacked the man after he crept into the garden of a house belonging to an elderly couple.

His body was found the next morning when the pensioners saw their blood-stained pets.

Superintendent Eugene Opperman of East Rand police said: "On investigation they discovered the mutilated body of an unidentified man.

"The gate was still locked and it appears as if the intruder had jumped over the high wall surrounding the premises with the intention of committing a crime."

A knife was found near his body. Police are not sure whether the man was alone.
