One feared dead as German flat tenant opens fire on bailiffs

A gunman is feared to have killed one person and taken others hostage after bailiffs tried to evict him from his apartment in Germany.

Police in Karlsruhe said two bailiffs arrived at the building at about 9am to eject him for failing to pay his rent, and then multiple shots were filed.

A spokesman said there were reports of one person killed and several taken hostage, but it was not possible to confirm them.

“We haven’t had any contact with the hostage taker,” he said.

The area in the Nordstadt section of the city has been blocked off, and police commando teams are on hand trying to make contact with the gunman.

He said he did not know how many hostages there could be, but neither of the bailiffs is accounted for.
