Chaos struck the Olympic torch relay through Paris today with police having to extinguish the flame four times faced with determined protests.

Officers escorted the torch onto a bus on four separate occasions over several hours, apparently to move it away from protesters.

Each time they had to put out the flame to put the torch on the bus and continue along the planned route.

The third time, police interrupted the procession as a precaution because they spotted a crowd of demonstrators on a bridge they were approaching.
