Suu Kyi receives parliament invite09/04/2012 - 10:10:42
Burma’s opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi will take her seat in parliament for the first time on April 23, following her historic election victory earlier this month.
Ms Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy party won 43 seats in the April 1 by-election and will become the main opposition presence in Burma’s parliament, which is dominated by allies of the former military regime.
Party spokesman Nyan Win said that Ms Suu Kyi received her official invitation to take her lower house seat when the next parliamentary session starts later this month.
The polls were viewed as a milestone for Burma, as it emerges from a half-century of military rule, and an astonishing reversal of fortune for the former political prisoner.
