Presidential electors have formally elected Barack Obama the US’s 44th president.

Electors gathering in state capitols across the country pushed Mr Obama above the 270 electoral votes needed to win, according to a tally.

Mr Obama takes office on January 20, becoming the nation’s first black president.

Yesterday’s voting was largely ceremonial, the results preordained by Mr Obama’s November 4 victory over Republican Senator John McCain.

Mr Obama won 365 electoral votes, to 173 for McCain. With every state reporting, all the electors had cast ballots in accordance with the popular votes in their states.
