Norway court to determine if Breivik is 'legally insane'

The man charged with carrying out Friday mass killings in Norway is due to appear behind closed doors in court today.

A spokesman for the Oslo court said that a judge made the decision over Anders Behring Breivik, 32, on a request from police.

Mr Breivik is accused of killing at least 93 people in a shooting and car bomb attack.

After Judge Kim Heger made the decision the court issued a statement.

“Based on information in the case the court finds that today’s detention hearing should be held behind closed doors,” it said.

“It is clear that there is concrete information that a public hearing with the suspect present could quickly lead to an extraordinary and very difficult situation in terms of the investigation and security.”

Kyrre Nakkim is political editor at Norway state broadcaster NRK.

He says the most pressing thing now will be to establish whether or not Breivik was legally insane at the time.

"They have taken the harshest (sentence) we have in Norway - it's going to lead to 21 years anyway, whether it's right-out murder (or not)," he said.

"The most important (thing)...now is whether this man is insane or not; whether he knew what was doing legally."
