North Korea agrees to more talks
North Korean officials visiting the South in a surprise trip have agreed to a second round of high-level talks.
There were no other immediate details in the reports by Yonhap and YTN.
The agreement came after North Korea’s presumptive No 2 leader led members of Pyongyang’s inner circle on a rare trip to South Korea for the close of the Asian Games. The rivals held their highest level face-to-face talks in five years.
The North Korean delegation is led by Hwang Pyong So, the top political officer for the Korean People’s Army and considered by outside analysts to be the country’s second most important official after leader Kim Jong Un.
After months of tensions, including a steady stream of insults between the divided neighbours and an unusual number of North Korean missile and rocket test firings, expectations for a breakthrough were not high, but the two sides agreed to have more senior level talks between the end of October and the beginning of November, according to a South Korean statement.
The topics of today’s discussions or the future talks were not immediately known.
