New shelling hits eastern Ukraine

A building has been hit by rocket fire in the eastern Ukraine city of Donetsk, killing at least one person and adding to the growing number of civilian casualties in the region despite a nearly two-week-old ceasefire.

An AP reporter saw the remains of what appeared to be a Grad rocket that had hit the building in the north of the city, where fighting centred on the government-controlled airport has caught many residential neighbourhoods in the crossfire.

There was one body visible at the scene but it was unclear if there were more casualties.

Despite the ceasefire and a law passed by the Ukrainian parliament granting greater autonomy to rebel-held parts of the east, civilian casualties have continued to rise, adding to an estimated 3,000 people killed.
