Man held in Rome after sister's body parts found in bins

Update 5.18pm: A man has confessed to killing his sister, whose hacked-off legs and other body parts were found in rubbish bins in Rome, Italian police said.

Maurizio Diotallevi, 62, was questioned at police headquarters by an investigating magistrate over the death of his sister Nicoletta, police said.

A spokesman added: "In front of the magistrate, Diotallevi admitted being the one who committed the murder and who attempted to hide the body."

The victim was identified as Nicoletta Diotallevi, 59, who lived with her brother in an apartment in the Flaminio neighbourhood. Police later found her brother in the apartment.

The body parts were discovered in the upmarket Parioli area of the Italian capital, about half a mile away.

A young woman rummaging through a bin used by residents discovered two legs, wrapped together with package tape.

The woman, who immediately alerted police, was reported to be in shock after the grisly find, Italian media said.

Officers questioned the dead woman's brother after viewing images from a CCTV camera near the bin.

In the video, a man was seen placing a heavy object into the bin, police said.

The woman's head and other body parts were later found in a bin on another street.

The suspect has been detained. A judge must rule in a few days whether to uphold the detention order.

Exactly what triggered the slaying was not immediately known, but police said "the crime apparently happened for family reasons".

Earlier: A murder probe has been launched after severed legs were found in a bin on an up-market street in Rome, while a head and torso were discovered in refuse elsewhere in the Italian capital.

Officers are questioning the brother of the suspected victim after the discovery of a woman's remains.

A woman alerted police on Tuesday evening after spotting the legs as she rummaged through the bin.

She is reportedly in shock after the grisly discovery.

Media reports said CCTV footage from a nearby shop on Monday night recorded a man throwing something into the rubbish bin where the legs were found.

Officers held up a white sheet near one bin on Wednesday to block the view of onlookers.
