More evidence for contribution of stress to heart disease

Scientists have uncovered more evidence of the harmful effects of stress on the heart.
A study suggests high levels of the stress hormone cortisol damages the cardiovascular system and increases the risk of dying from heart disease.
Experts in Holland, who conducted the study, said it was the first time cortisol had been directly linked to an increased risk of death from heart disease.
Cortisol is produced by the body in stressful situations to help it react quickly. But if levels of cortisol are continually high in the body, there can be damaging effects on the heart.
