Money worries stop Europeans having more babies

Money worries stop Europeans having more babies than they would like, a study backed by the European Commission said today.

More than half of the 30,000 people questioned – both male and female – said they would like to have at least two children but actually had fewer because they were worried about the future and the cost of raising children.

The study said there was a difference between the average number of children people had and what they would like in Cyprus, Poland, Finland, Estonia, Lithuania, Hungary and the Netherlands.

Germans, Italians, Austrians, Belgians and Czechs said – on average – they would like fewer than two children.
