Ratko Mladic is due to appear at the UN war crimes tribunal this morning after 16 years on the run.

The former Bosnian Serb general will be asked to identify himself, answer questions about his health, and then plead to 11 counts of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity on the indictment.

His lawyer says Mladic is in a prison hospital at The Hague, because his health has deteriorated.

If he fails to plead to the charges, Mladic will be given 30 days to do so or have the court enter a not-guilty plea on his behalf.

If found guilty, he faces a maximum penalty of life in prison.
