Ratko Mladic has described charges against him as "obnoxious".

Mladic made his first appearance before the UN court in the Hague on war crimes charges, and is now due to appear again on July 4. He will remain in custody until then.

The 69-year-old, who was arrested in Serbia last week after 16 years on the run from genocide charges, told the court he's a "gravely ill man".

He shook his head as a summary of the charges was announced, and speaking through a translator said he didn't want to hear it:

"I do not want to have a single letter or sentence of that indictment read out to me," he said.
