Denmark and Germany have signed a formal agreement to build a 12.4-mile bridge across the Baltic Sea between the two countries.

The road-and-rail link across the Fehmarn strait is to be completed in 2018.

In Germany, local authorities and environmentalists oppose the estimated €3.8bn project, calling it unnecessary and a threat to the environment.

Denmark and Germany’s transportation ministers signed a binding agreement today that envisions a four-lane highway and a twin railway track.

Costs for the link will be carried by private investors and EU funding.

Construction is to begin in 2012.
