Merkel wins second term

Final results confirmed Chancellor Angela Merkel won a second term and a majority for a new centre-right government in Germany’s parliamentary election.

The results of yesterday’s vote give Ms Merkel’s new coalition a comfortable majority. It has 332 seats in the lower house of parliament, compared with other parties’ combined 290.

The figures released early today show Ms Merkel’s conservative Christian Democratic Union and its Bavaria-only sister, the Christian Social Union, won 33.8% of the vote. Their new coalition partner, the Free Democrats, took 14.6%.

The centre-left Social Democrats, Ms Merkel’s partner in the outgoing “grand coalition” won 23%.

The Greens won 10.7% and the Left Party 11.9%.
