Last surviving Nuremberg prosecutor gives $1m to US Holocaust museum

The last surviving prosecutor of the Nuremberg trials has donated $1m to the US Holocaust Memorial Museum's genocide prevention centre.

The museum announced on Wednesday that Ben Ferencz will donate the sum to the Simon-Skjodt Centre for the Prevention of Genocide.

The annual gift is renewable for up to $10m.

Now 96 and living in Delray Beach, Florida, Mr Ferencz was the chief US prosecutor in the Einsatzgruppen case, which tried 22 leaders of the killing units of the Nazis' SS troops.

He has dedicated his life since then to the creation of the International Criminal Court, which could prosecute any government's leaders for war crimes. The US has not signed on.
