Amanda Knox has made a tearful appeal as she tries to get her murder conviction overturned, telling a court in Italy that she is innocent and does not want to spend the rest of her life in prison.

Amanda Knox has made a tearful appeal as she tries to get her murder conviction overturned, telling a court in Italy that she is innocent and does not want to spend the rest of her life in prison.

The American student said nothing is more important that finding the truth despite “prejudices and mistakes”.

At times her voice was breaking as she made the remarks at the end of a court session in Perugia.

Knox was convicted in 2009 of sexually assaulting and murdering her British roommate Meredith Kercher, and sentenced to 26 years in prison. Her co-defendant and ex-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito was also convicted and sentenced to 25 years. Both have denied wrongdoing.

On Saturday the court also told independent experts reviewing DNA evidence to finish their study by June 30.
