US senator Ted Kennedy was said to be doing well today after he was released from the hospital following his seizure at Barack Obama’s inaugural lunch event.
Mr Kennedy’s office said the 76-year-old Massachusetts Democrat was resting at home and in good spirits.
Doctors blame fatigue for the seizure suffered by Mr Kennedy, who is being treated for a brain tumour, during the Washington DC inaugural luncheon after spending hours at events celebrating the swearing-in of President Obama.
Meanwhile, his niece Caroline Kennedy has renewed her determination to win the New York seat on the US Senate once held by her murdered uncle, Robert Kennedy.
A source familiar with her decision said today Ms Kennedy had had misgivings about taking on the new job after her surviving uncle’s seizure on Inauguration Day, but had now decided to continue the Senate race.
News reports said earlier that Ms Kennedy had withdrawn from the Senate battle to succeed Hillary Clinton, who was confirmed yesterday as US secretary of state.
New York governor David Paterson says he hopes to make the appointment by the weekend.
