The Italian Government is to investigate allegations of police brutality against hundreds of anti-capitalist protestors in Genoa last weekend.

Some British demonstrators have threatened to sue after officers in full riot gear raided the premises where they were staying in the Italian city and allegedly began assaulting people indiscriminately.

A paramilitary policeman also shot an Italian anti-capitalist dead during rioting to protest against the policies of the G8 leaders, who were meeting in Genoa at the time.

Around 200 people from the Irish wing of the Globalise Resistance group travelled to Genoa for last weekend's protest.

One of those protestors, Rory Hearne, said the police strategy totally failed to stop the violence or contain the protest and he accused some officers of actually looking for trouble.

He said there was "a decision by the Italian State, along with the French Government, who were stopping people at the border, to try to intimidate protestors."

He continued: "The massive oppression that we saw over there was an incredible indictment of the so-called democracy."
