Israel: Cabinet ministers fitted for bullet-proof vests

03/07/2005 - 18:05:49
Israel’s Shin Bet security services today fitted Cabinet ministers for bullet-proof vests after receiving threats from Jewish extremists who oppose an upcoming withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, defence officials said.

The Cabinet ministers tried on the vests, but it was unclear when they would begin wearing them or how often, the defence officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity due to security concerns.

One official said Shin Bet would conduct a daily review of the situation and would inform ministers whether they would have to wear the jackets based on the findings.

Shin Bet fears that Jewish extremists who oppose Israel’s withdrawal in August from the Gaza Strip and four West Bank settlements could try to assassinate or injure Cabinet ministers who support the pullout.

There have been increasing threats made against Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s life since he announced the plan 18 months ago, according to security officials, and there have been times when he has been surrounded by up to 15 bodyguards when walking through parliament – one of the most secure buildings in Israel.
