Islamic extremist leader surrenders
A leader of the Islamic extremist group al-Shabab, who has a $3m bounty on his head, has surrendered in Somalia, according to intelligence sources.
Zakariya Ismail Ahmed Hersi surrendered to police in the Gedo region, said an anonymous Somali intelligence officer.
He said Hersi might have surrendered because he fell out with those loyal to Ahmed Godane, al-Shabab’s top leader who was killed in a US air strike earlier this year.
Hersi was one of eight senior al-Shabab men for whom the US offered a total $33m in rewards for information leading to their capture in 2012.
Despite suffering losses such as losing major cities, al-Shabab remains a threat in Somalia and Kenya.
