Iraqi jet drops bomb over Baghdad

At least nine civilians have been killed after a Russian-made fighter jet accidentally dropped a bomb over a Baghdad neighbourhood, Iraqi officials said.

The incident took place in the eastern neighbourhood of New Baghdad.

A technical failure caused the Sukhoi jet to malfunction and drop the bomb, military spokesman Brigadier General Saad Maan Ibrahim said.

The plane – one of several Sukhois used by Iraq in the fight against Islamic State – was returning to base when the accident happened.

A dozen other civilians were injured, according to a police officer at the scene and a medical official at a nearby hospital.
