Indonesia has grounded four Boeing 737-200 planes over safety concerns following a crash that killed 143 people, it was reported today.

The planes belong to four different airlines and have potential safety problems including wheel system and brake deficiencies, the Jakarta Post says, quoting transport minister Hatta Rajasa.

It was not clear how long they would be grounded.

The government has intensified safety checks of commercial aircraft since a Mandala Airlines Boeing 737-200 crashed in Medan, on Sumatra Island, shortly after take-off last Monday.

Air safety experts probing the accident say it is too early to speculate on why the plane came down in a crowded section of the city and burst into flames.
