Iberia Airlines cancels hundreds of flights

26/10/2009 - 11:49:32
Spanish airline Iberia today cancelled around 440 flights because of a strike by flight attendants seeking pay increases.

An Iberia official says the two-day strike will affect about a quarter of its flights today and tomorrow. Madrid’s Barajas airport is the hub most affected.

The official spoke today on condition of anonymity in line with company rules.

Flights to resort areas like the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands are operating normally, as are long-haul international flights.

Two unions of flight attendants out of five represented at Iberia called the stoppage to pressure for pay raises after a wage freeze instituted four years ago.
