Hundreds feared dead after boat capsizes

Hundreds of people are feared dead after two boats carrying up to 500 refugees capsized off the Libyan city of Zuwara.

The first boat, which signalled for help yesterday had nearly 50 people on board, while the second had as many as 400 passengers.

The latest tragedy comes after authorities in Austria said it may be some time before they know how many people perished in a lorry which was abandoned on a roadside.

A family rescued by Irish naval vessel, the L E Niamh in August.

At least 50 refugees are believed to have suffocated in the Hungarian registered vehicle.

The UN says 2,400 people have died trying to cross the sea to Europe so far this year and Jane-Anne McKenna from Medecins Sans Frontieres says we need to take urgent action.

"I think we need to look at the overall scale of the crisis, 250,000 people have come to Europe so far this year. If you look at the Middle East at the moment, it's the countries such as Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey who are taking on the majority of refugees, particularly from Syria," said Ms McKenna.

"I think we need to take a look at what more Europe can do to ensure that we can afford safe and legal channels for those who are fleeing violent conflict who are in need of safety and protection."
