Huge drugs haul in Helmand province

Nato says Afghan and international forces have found nearly two tons of processed heroin, 1,800 pounds of opium and 200 pounds of ammonium nitrate that could have been used to make 25 roadside bombs in Naw Zad district of Helmand province in Afghanistan.

According to the US Drug Enforcement Agency, the drugs, found yesterday, had a street value in the United States of more than $38m`(€29m) before taking into account the common practice of cutting it with other ingredients, which would increase the value.

Nato said another joint force arrested a Taliban insurgent involved in bomb-making after intelligence indicated he was plotting an attack during the upcoming international conference on Tuesday in Kabul. Several other insurgents were arrested during the raid last night in Kabul.
