Horsemeat scandal to be revealed on TV
A new documentary series goes behind the scenes at frozen food giant Iceland as it deals with the fall-out from the horsemeat scandal.
Programme-makers spent a year filming in stores and in the boardroom with boss Malcolm Walker, who founded the firm more than 40 years ago.
Walker, a self-confessed “cowboy”, is famous for his eccentric management style which includes visiting successful stores with a suitcase full of cash to reward staff.
He said: “I’m in love with all our customers because they give me everything I’ve got. They pay for my car, my house, my holidays, everything.”
The three-part BBC2 series was filmed at the height of the scandal, which erupted after it emerged some frozen burgers contained horse DNA.
The publicity around the scandal saw sales of frozen burgers and ready meals fall although Iceland’s sales rose.
