Hague sceptical of Syrian ceasefire

Kofi Annan said a ceasefire in Syria appears to be holding on its first day.

The UN-Arab envoy said he was encouraged by reports that the situation in Syria is relatively calm, but that President Assad has not fulfilled the UN-backed peace plan.

The plan calls for the withdrawal of forces from urban areas, the release of arbitrarily detained people, freedom of movement for journalists and the right to demonstrate.

Mr. Annan is calling on the UN Security Council to demand that troops be pulled out of cities.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague is sceptical that the Assad regime will implement this peace plan:

"It's too early to say of course whether it will truly be implemented, we have to come at this with a sceptical eye", he said.

"because on every major occasion in the last year when the Syrian Government has said it is cooperating with an international plan, they have then gone on to break their word".
