GOAL calls for end to Haiti 'power vaccum'

18/01/2010 - 10:38:46
GOAL today hit out at what the organisation believes is a lack of urgency, on the part of the International Community in the area of aid delivery and security.

In a statement, John O’Shea GOAL CEO said: “It is now almost a week since the earthquake struck - and yet little aid has reached the suffering.

“Somebody must take responsibility for that situation.

“Many major entities are involved - but it seems nobody is prepared to take ultimate responsibility.

“Security is a major issue - so where are the thousands of troops promised?”

“Access is a major issue so why has the log jam not been sorted out?,” asked O’Shea, who added: “The aid effort will only operate effectively when these twin issues of security and access have been resolved. And that cannot be done by the aid agencies.

“The UN is the lead distributor of food aid; the US government has pledged troops and the Haitian government say they are in control. But in truth the result is a disastrous power vacuum with nobody knowing who is in charge.”
