Glitter to be sentenced today

Gary Glitter is the latest in a string of high-profile celebrities to be convicted following investigations by Scotland Yard’s Operation Yewtree.

The criminal probe was launched in the wake of disclosures that former BBC DJ Jimmy Savile was a prolific paedophile.

Launched in October 2012 by the Metropolitan Police, Yewtree has three lines of inquiry – claims against Savile, claims against Savile and others, and claims against others.

So far more than a dozen people have been arrested as part of the investigation.

Five celebrities have been convicted of sex crimes under Operation Yewtree.

Former PR guru Max Clifford, artist Rolf Harris and former BBC radio presenter Chris Denning have all been jailed following trials brought under Yewtree.

Clifford, 71, was jailed for eight years in May last year after being convicted of a string of indecent assaults, carried out between 1977 and 1984, using his celebrity connections to lure women.

Australian-born Harris was convicted of 12 indecent assaults – one on an eight-year-old autograph hunter, two on girls in their early teens, and a catalogue of abuse against his daughter’s friend over 16 years – and jailed for five years and nine months last June.

Former BBC Radio One host Dave Lee Travis was given a suspended sentence after being convicted of indecent assault.

Glitter’s sentence today comes as it emerged yesterday that Savile had raped or assaulted at least 63 patients at Stoke Mandeville Hospital where he was an official fundraiser.
