Gingrich presidential campaign over

Republican candidate Newt Gingrich has officially announced that his campaign for his party's US Presidential nomination is over.

Yesterday, the former speaker of the House of Representatives posted a video on his website thanking supporters who've stood by him.

His decision leaves the path clear for Mitt Romney to face Barack Obama later this year.

Gingrich's campaign may be remembered for his bold promise to turn the moon into the US's 51st state.

In his conceding address, he admitted that may not have been his finest moment:

"my wife has pointed out to me approximately 219 times, give or take three, that moon colony was not my most clever comment in this campaign".
