Firefighter helping 10 people killed as floods surge over US midwest

Three people have died after severe flooding caused by torrential rains in America's midwest.

One river in Texas rose by 27 feet, breaking records set in 1929.

Authorities are urging people to stay away from damaged areas and say some should go to higher ground as the rains continue.

Texas and Oklahoma are the worst hit states so far.

The deaths included a fire-fighter trying to help 10 people trapped in their homes by rising floodwater in Oklahoma. Fire services say he fell into a storm drain, with an investigation underway.

Another man died in San Marcos, Texas.

There are also power lines down and debris on the roadways. Hundreds of homes have been flooded or destroyed.

An official declared it the "largest flood in the history of this region".
