Eight die in nursing home fire in Spain
Eight elderly residents have died and 11 others were injured as a fire swept through a nursing home just outside the north-eastern Spanish city of Zaragoza.
The cause of the fire, which broke out early on Sunday, is still unknown and is being investigated.
Regional interior ministry spokesman Gustavo Alcalde said one of the nursing home's caretakers has also been taken to hospital.
One man with serious burns is in a critical condition in the intensive care unit of a local hospital, regional health spokesman Sebastian Celeya said, adding that the others are suffering from smoke inhalation.
The fire appears to have started in a first-floor bedroom of the three-storey building, fire brigade spokesman Carlos Carilla said.
The fire department had responded to a phone call from a person who asked for help to evacuate elderly people and said a mattress in a bedroom had caught fire.
Mr Alcalde said other lives had been saved thanks to the rapid response by fire and police, but called it "a very sad day" in Zaragoza.
