US President Donald Trump has said he expects the US to do "a lot of trading with the UK", as he met British Prime Minister Theresa May in New York.

The meeting came minutes after Mrs May delivered a speech at the United Nations General Assembly in which she appealed for all states to come to the defence of international agreements like the Paris accord on climate change, from which Mr Trump has threatened US withdrawal.

The premiers shook hands warmly at the opening of the meeting, at the Lotte Palace Hotel in New York.

Seated in front of a row of US and UK flags, Mr Trump said: "It's great to have Prime Minister May from the UK and her representatives who are people who we know very well.

"We will be doing a lot of trading with the United Kingdom and we look forward to it.

"We've gotten to know each other over the last period of a year and it's a real honour to have you here."

After shaking hands with President Trump, Mrs May responded: "It's good to be here and as you say, we've had many discussions between our representatives and ourselves on a whole variety of issues, including trade, which is important for us, and some other policy issues and our security and defence relationship, which of course is the closest we have."
