Divers search for missing crew off Turkey coast
01/02/2012 - 08:21:08A team of divers is to search the wreck of a freighter which sank off Turkey's Black Sea coast for its eight missing crewmen.
The ship, Vera, with 10 Ukrainian and one Georgian crew, was sailing to the Turkish port of Aliaga from Russia when it sank off the coast of Eregli in a storm yesterday.
The ship's second and third captains and its cook, a woman, were rescued but eight crew are missing.
Governor Erol Ayyildiz said today that divers would scour the ship, which was carrying scrap metal, in case the missing crewmen are trapped inside.
The Caostal Safety Directorate said Coast Guard boats, tug boats and a helicopter searched for the crew throughout the night despite stormy conditions.
