Defector fuels Burma nuclear fears
Evidence from a Burma army defector has deepened suspicion that the country’s military leaders have nuclear ambitions.
Army Major Sai Thein Win brought out hundreds of photos of an alleged nuclear weapons programme when he left Burma in February 2010.
The evidence is no smoking gun. He said the programme was poorly managed and achieved little, and experts are divided over what the photos show.
But the allegations touch on a matter that is bound to resurface as Burma tries to curry international favour and end sanctions.
The US and other nations are concerned about Burma’s ties with nuclear-armed ally North Korea.
Sai Thein Win said he has not been debriefed by foreign governments despite going public with his allegations after he defected 15 months ago.
