Car bomb discovered in central Stockholm

A car bomb has been discovered and defused in central Stockholm.

Police were alerted by the car's owner and cordoned off the area. Bomb squad officers confirmed there was an explosive device.

The car was parked close to the Nepalese Consulate and across the road from the UN's refugee commissioner's office.

No one has yet claimed responsibility for the bomb discovered early in the morning.

Residents of six blocks of flats in the area were woken and evacuated on buses. They were able to return after the bomb was disarmed and, along with the car, removed from the area.

Police commissioner Anders Sigurdsson told a Swedish newspaper: "We aren't sure who planted the bomb, or why.

"According to the car's owner, he hasn't received any threats."
