Brock Turner to be released from jail after serving just three months for sexual assault

Brock Turner, former Stanford swimmer, is set to be released this Friday after serving just half of his six-month sentence for sexual assault.

Mr Turner, 20, was found guilty of sexual assault with intent to commit rape of an intoxicated woman, sexually penetrating an intoxicated person with a foreign object and sexually penetrating an unconscious person with a foreign object.

The young man was caught by two bystanders 'thrusting' on top of a motionless woman outside a fraternity house on 18 January, 2015.

His light sentence of six-months provoked international outrage and calls for the judge Aaron Persky to be disbarred.

In California there is a mandatory sentence for forcible rape, however the law is not the same for cases when the victim is unconscious or intoxicated.

Following the case, the state passed legislation removing a judges ability to use discretion during sentencing in such cases and the judge in question has removed himself from all criminal cases and is facing a high-profile recall campaign.

For Mr Turner, following his brief jail time, he will then be placed on the sex offenders register for the rest of his life.
