British ship seizes €46m cocaine after dramatic Caribbean sea chase

A British ship has intercepted €46m worth of cocaine after a dramatic chase in the Caribbean.

The Royal Fleet Auxiliary's Wave Knight was called into action after a suspicious speedboat was spotted in the sea between Puerto Rico and Venezuela.

A six-hour sea chase ensued.

A sniper from the British Royal Marines took out the boat's engines from the back of a Lynx helicopter.

First, warning shots were fired. After these were ignored, the sniper took aim at the speedboat's engines, and disabled the vessel.

The speedboat was brought to a halt and the US Coast Guard boarded and seized 350kg of cocaine.

Before the officials had reached the speedboat, however, the boat's crew were seen throwing what was later estimated to be another 650kg of cocaine worth around £26m.

The five crew from the speedboat were taken with the drugs onto the US Coast Guard cutter Richard Etheridge and handed over to authorities in Miami Beach.
