British government to urge Supreme court to allow article 50 without parliament backing

The British government will urge the Supreme Court to rule Theresa May can trigger the process of leaving the EU without the backing of parliament later.

Eleven judges will spend the next four days hearing its appeal against last month’s High Court ruling.

The devolved administrations will also address the court.

Stephen Gethins, the SNP’s Europe spokesman, says it is right Holyrood should have a say in triggering article 50: "The decision to leave the European Union will have a very significant impact on areas of responsibility to the Scottish parliament.

"Climate change, the environment, food and drink industry."
