British aid worker jailed for abusing Albanian children
A British charity worker accused of sexually abusing children at an orphanage he founded has been jailed by an Albanian court for 20 years.
David Brown, 57, has been held in an Albanian prison since the allegations came to light more than two years ago.
Brown, from Edinburgh, founded the children’s home in the capital Tirana eight years ago after working with a charity in neighbouring Kosovo.
Touched by the plight of Tirana’s street children he set up the home where he would care for orphans and abandoned children.
He was arrested during a police raid in May 2006 and the orphanage was subsequently shut down.
Two others who worked at the shelter were charged with molesting children. Brown has vehemently denied the charges and has been backed by supporters in Scotland who have set up a website in his defence.
But yesterday he was described as a “threat to society” as he was jailed.
