A flatbed truck drove off the side of the mountain road in Bolivia, killing at least 38 people.

The truck veered off a road yesterday near the city of Tarija, 600 miles south of the capital of La Paz, falling more than 300 feet, said transit police chief Jaime Reyes.

Trucks such as the one involved in the accident are frequently used by Bolivia’s poor as a cheap form of transport.

Authorities were hoping to determine the cause of the crash after interviewing the seven survivors.
