Gaza Strip zoo resorts to stuffed animals for exhibits24/04/2012 - 17:16:45
A zoo in the Gaza Strip has started putting stuffed animals in cages.
Animals who die at the Khan Younis zoo are stuffed and then placed on display for visitors to admire, but flies have been attracted to some of the 10 animals that have so far been embalmed and a number of the mammals have imperfections.
There is a monkey with missing limbs, a porcupine with a hole in its head and a lion with a patchy coat, but there is no zoo keeper on the premises and medical treatment is done by seeking advice over the phone with zoo vets in Egypt.
Owner Mohammed Awaida explained: "The idea to mummify animals started after the Gaza war because a number of animals like the lion, the tiger, monkeys and crocodiles died.
“So we asked around and we learned from the web how to start.”
