Insurgents launched a series of attacks in Baghdad today, including car bombs and a mortar round, killing at least three Iraqis and wounding 12, officials said.

The most serious of the early morning attacks involved three suicide car bombs that exploded in the Azamiyah section of central Baghdad, said police chief Brig. Khalid al-Hassan.

The first one hit an Iraqi army patrol, causing an unknown number of injuries, al-Hassan said.

The other two suicide car bombs struck separate barricades near the headquarters of the Interior Ministry’s local special forces unit, killing three Iraqi policemen and wounding 10 Iraqis, including policemen and civilians, al-Hassan said.

Elsewhere, the southern district of Dora was hit by two roadside bombs and a mortar shell.

The first bomb targeted a police patrol near a major power plant, said policeman Ahmed Abdul Amir. The second one was aimed at an Iraqi army patrol, Capt. Falah Al-Mihamadawi of Dora police said. No casualties were reported in either of those attacks.

However, a 10-year-old child was seriously wounded in Dora when a mortar round hit a house there, said Al-Mihamadawi.

In al-Dawoodi neighbourhood of western Baghdad, unidentified gunmen opened fire on a police patrol, wounding one policeman, said police Lt. Majid Zaki.

The US military in Baghdad said it only had information about the roadside bomb in the Dora district.
