Gunmen killed a policeman and his wife in a drive-by shooting south of Baghdad while an army commander survived an assassination attempt in the Iraqi capital, security authorities said today.

Baghdad-based policeman Razzaq Ubaid Hinaidi and his wife were killed late last nightwhile driving near the village of Aalgaya, about 60 miles south of Baghdad.

The couple’s two children were also badly wounded in the attack.

An Iraqi army brigadier general survived an assassination attempt early today when eight gunmen attacked his convoy at an junction in Saydiya, southern Baghdad.

Soldiers returned fire against the gunmen, who had got out of two cars before attacking the convoy. Four gunmen were killed and the remainder fled on foot.

Inside the gunmen’s cars, soldiers found 15 hand grenades, four rifles, mortar rounds and explosives.
