Australian state orders inquiry into clerical abuse claims

The Australian state of New South Wales has ordered a special inquiry to look into claims the Catholic Church covered up for paedophile priests.

The inquiry will examine allegations made by a senior police investigator that the church silenced investigations and destroyed evidence.

A similar inquiry is underway in Victoria, where the Church revealed that at least 620 children were abused by its clergy since the 1930s.
